Quilting and Needle Art Extravaganza Picks Statesville for it's Venue
December 24, Statesville, NC.
The Quilting and Needle Art Extravaganza will be held Friday, January 9 and Saturday, January 10 at the Statesville Civic Center, 300 South Center St., Statesville, NC 28677. The hours are 11 am - 5 pm on Friday and 9 am - 5 pm on Saturday. Admission is $3.00. The Quilting and Needle Art Extravaganza features 24 shops under one roof that will interest any quilter, knitter, or fiber craftsperson. The show is organized by The Quilter's Gallery which is owned by Cindy Page and Patti Cline, sisters that operated their quilt shop in Charlotte for over 25 years. The purpose of the show is to help small needlework shops work together to promote business. The Page sisters chose Statesville as their location because of the easy access from
I-77 and 1-40. Knowing that many customers don't like the traffic in Charlotte, or even Mooresville, they chose to bring shops from Charlotte, Winston Salem, and Mooresville to the Statesville Civic Center. Several local shops will participate as well. With easy access and plenty of parking, the QNAE will pull customers from Asheville to Greensboro, and from the Virginia border to Rock Hill, SC. Customer can enjoy "green shopping" by saving gas and time, since all their favorite shops are in one accessible location.
Shoppers will find lots of fabric, both cottons and wools, as well as quilting supplies at the QNAE. Several dealers with sewing machines, embroidery machines and long arm quilting machines will be there as well. Knitters will find yarns and a variety of fibers. Shaker boxes, thimbles and buttons will round out the variety of merchandise. Some shops will have shop samples, quilt tops and quilts for sale.
As the economy slows down, small shops are the first to feel the pinch. Small entrepreneurs don't have a corporate pocketbook to carry them through tough times. A "shop hop" format provides small shops a focused, affordable retail event. "There is enough business for all of us, but we have to help each other, not compete with each other." says Shirley Bailey, co-owner of Sew Original, a Bernina sewing machine dealer, with shops in Winston Salem and Boone. "Having all the shops in one location helps make it more convenient for shoppers to see how each shop has it's own individual character. My philosophy is that if one of our customers is looking for an item that I don't carry we will direct them to another shop where we know they will find it. The more quilt shops we have, the better it is for the quilting community. When we're united, it's free advertising for each other." says Aimee Griffin, owner of Overall Quilter in Indian Trail, NC. "January is when quilters start a new project. The frenzy of the holidays is over, and we want to have something fun and creative to do inside. Sewers and knitters can't sit still. They need a project to be happy." says Brenda Arrowood, owner of Schoolhouse Quilts in Forest City, NC. Some of the shops have been around a while, but for some shops like Needle and Thread from Statesville, NC, this is their first experience at a retail trade show. They hope that exposure from this show will keep their doors open during this economic slowdown.
The Quilting and Needle Art Extravaganza will offer shoppers a variety of merchandise. Quilters, knitters, jewelry makers, doll makers, smockers, and sewers will find something to entice them. Easy access makes this the perfect venue for some shoppers that have limited mobility, or are intimidated by metro area traffic.

The Statesville Civic Center is located at the intersection of Front and Center Streets in downtown Statesville.
From Northbound I-77, take exit 49A and turn left on highway 70 to highway 115/21 (Center St.). Turn right and the Civic Center is on the left.
From Southbound I-77, take exit 50 and turn right on East Broad Street. Go straight into town and turn left on South Tradd Street then right on E. Front Street. At the light turn left and the Civic Center is on the right.
From I-40, take exit 150 and drive south on highways 115/21 (Also, known as Center St.). Travel one and a half miles and the civic center is on the right.
Sew Original is going to be one of the venders.

Dear Sewing Friends,
What a beautiful time of year, especially in NC!! All of the bright colors of spring in the landscapes are equally vibrant in the new fabrics that are filling our shelves. Whatever type of sewing you do we have the fabric, books, patterns, & inspiration to help you get started! As Tim on Project Runway says “It’s Sew Time”. I hope all of you watch it on Wednesdays at 10:00pm on Bravo. It is a great show for anyone who loves to sew.
If you have not seen the My Label software, be sure to ask us about it or check it out on the website. If you thought you could not make garments to fit, now great garment sewing is within your reach! For those who love embroidery Bernina is introducing “Design Connection”. It is a 12-month club membership that includes thousands of designs plus projects, tutorials, and videos. Join today and save over $1400!
Again in July we will be traveling to Bernina University in Kansas City to learn all about Berninas newest products and ideas. We will be anxious to share those with you. Last year 25 of us had the trip of a life-time when we traveled to Germany and Switzerland and toured the Bernina factory. Most of us said that it was the best vacation we had ever been on so we are planning a textile trek to Italy in September 2009. If you are interested in more informationlet us know at one of our locations.
We celebrated our 5th anniversary at Sew Original in October. Many small businesses do not survive those first five years, we are so thankful to have so many loyal customers. Without you we would not exist. The small retailer faces many challenges each day, but one of our biggest is trying to compete with internet sales. Yes, you may save a little if you by a book from Amazon, but are they able to answer your question about that quilt block if it doesn't go together just right? We want to be there for you after you buy just as we are in the beginning. You have heard us say many times "Where you buy is as important as what you buy."
As you may now already know, we are once again a Bernina only dealer. Bernina has always been our passion and if you have the best brand in the world why sell anything else? Bernina is the only machine company in the world that is still owned by the family who founded the company. Bernina is made with all metal parts and has a 20 year warranty on mechanical parts, how many machine companies can compare to that? Nothing Sews Like A Bernina, Nothing. We sell the best and service the rest! If you are shopping for a new Bernina, machine mastery classes are a very important p art of your new purchase. Sew Original offers up to 11 classes depending on the model purchased. No other dealer offers that! We also offer two years of free cleanings for your machine.
Sign ups are well under way for Camp SO & Sew. This annual sewing retreat is growing and promises to be bigger and better than last year. For more info check our website, www.seworiginal.org or come by either store.
For those of you who haven't heard of the public art display currently underway in western NC and surrounding states we'd like everyone to check out The Appalachian Quilt Trail, a series of quilt sites strung together in Eastern Tennessee, from the Kentucky/West Virginia line to the north, down to the North Carolina line to the south. The sites are quilt blocks painted on wooden squares and hung on barns and buildings throughout the participating communities. The quilt blocks were chosen as the theme because of their rich history of comfort, family, heritage and community. Quilt Trails can be seen in Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Madison, Watauga, and Yancey counties. Check out the website www.quilttrailswnc.org for more info and a map of current quilt locations.
Happy Stitching,
Melinda & Shirley

Shirley working hard on one of her many projects.

Melinda hard at work on Easter dresses for her granddaughters.
Debbie and Martha cutting and sewing (and talking).
Susan working on her "pointless" quilt top.
Kay at work on her Weight lifting inspired quilt top.
Beautiful yellows, blues and green hand dyed silks. M-m-m-m-m-m!
We did do a little work. Faye is here putting her classes down on next quarters calendar for Melinda.
Candy is busy working on a beautiful star design on her tiny feather-lite machine.

Muriel is putting together her BOM Bright blocks from TWO years ago.

The other gals not pictured are camera sly. Terri worked on and completed a quilt top. Holly worked on and completed two quilt tops (they were UFO's). Joyce worked on two quilts, a black & white reversible quilt and a black & white Cat quilt. (I believe she likes Black & White, don't you?) Jeannie worked on a table topper and a Professional Tote. And last but not least, Judy worked on a Daisy quilt for her graddaughter Daisy.

The owners, Larry & Shelia Carver were wonderful hosts. The food was great. They and their staff did a wonderful job making our visit so productivity. Thanks for a wonderful, wonderful weekend.
